According to new research presented by SanBio, Inc., a scientific leader in regenerative medicine for neurological disorders, the long-term healthcare costs for patients suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) with evidence of motor impairment are significantly higher than those of the general population. The study was called the “Economic Burden of Illness for Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury Resulting in Chronic Motor Impairment” and was presented this past Friday at the World Congress of Brain Injury in New Orleans. According to Dr. Damien Bates, the Chief Medical Officer and Head of Research at SanBio and a coauthor of the study, “there is a clear need for treatment that would help relieve the economic burden on patients suffering from the lingering effects of a traumatic brain injury.”
The study was conducted by the Analysis Group, Inc., an economic and healthcare consulting firm which was funded by SanBio, Inc. It examined how much the treatment for 299 patients cost, as well as how often the resources available for them were utilized. All patients were between ages 18 and 75, they had been diagnosed with a TBI in 2006 or later, and had evidence of sustained motor impairment six months after they were injured. They were compared to a group of nearly 600 patients without any record of having a brain injury.
The costs of TBI patients were highest during the acute phase of the injury. However, even in the second year after their injury occurred, TBI patients with evidence of motor impairment incurred excess costs of nearly $27,000 per patient. These costs were approximately four times higher than those of the control group. The higher costs were attributed to elevated use of all medical resources analyzed, which included inpatient and outpatient services, emergency department visits, physical therapy and rehabilitation services, as well as prescription drug use.
If you or a loved one has suffered a TBI from an accident, seek the help of an experienced injury attorney. Insurance companies will try to settle your injury case quickly without taking into account the medical costs that can continue to accumulate even after they paid off the settlement. The Law Offices of Arash Khorsandi will not let that happen. Call us today at 619-577-4957 to receive a free consultation.
