A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a SUV this past Thursday evening in Little Italy. According to the San Diego Police Department, the hit-and-run occurred just after 11 p.m. on West Laurel Street. The driver of the SUV fled the scene and was later arrested.
According to authorities, the deceased victim was walking in a crosswalk on Pacific Highway at West Laurel Street when he was struck by a speeding white Jeep SUV. The victim was pronounced dead once emergency personnel arrived. His identity has not been released, but he was described as being a man in his 50s. According to a witness at the scene, the driver fled westbound on West Laurel and turned on Harbor Boulevard.
An investigation is still ongoing in order to determine all the factors that were involved in the fatal crash. San Diego police closed Pacific Highway between Juniper and West Laurel for several hours as they assessed the scene. Officers were able to track the driver to his home in the Encanto area. He was arrested on Brooklyn Avenue just after 7 a.m. and later identified as 21-year-old David Dominguez; he is facing charges of felony hit and run, driving under the influence, and other charges that were not disclosed.
